양극화 및 계층격차 인식에 대한 문화의 역할

최근 한국 사회뿐만 아니라 전 세계적으로 양극화와 주관적 계층인식의 악화 현상이 심각한 사회문제로서 우려의 대상이 되고 있다. 사회적으로 양극화 현상이 심화되고 주관적 계층인식이 부정적으로 형성되면, 사회계층 간에 위화감이 조성되어 궁극적으로는 사회통합을 저해하게 된다. 이에 그동안 많은 연구들이 양극화를 다루어왔지만, 이들 연구들은 주로 사회에서 구조적으로 형성된 양극화 현상을 객관적인 관점에서 조명했다는 한계가 있다. 또한 양극화와 계층인식 심화의 주요 영향요인을 밝히기 위한 선행연구들 중 문화적 요인과 양극화 및 계층 인식 간 관계를 살펴보는 연구는 상대적으로 찾아보기 어려우며, 문화적 요인의 역할에 대한 논의가 부족했다. 이와 같은 문제의식 하에 본 연구는 한국 사회의 양극화 인식 심화 현상과 객관적 계층위치 대비 주관적 계층인식의 악화 현상에 주목하고 이를 완화할 수 있는 대안으로서 문화적 요인의 효과를 실증적으로 규명하였다. 본 연구는 기존 선행연구들의 논의를 확장하여 양극화를 사회양극화와 경제양극화로 대별해 살펴봄으로써 양극화에 대한 균형 있는 논의를 시도하며, 이를 사회구성원의 인식을 통해 실증적으로 분석해보았다는 점에서 기존 연구들과 차별성을 가진다고 할 수 있다.

The Role of Culture on Perceptions of
Polarization and Class Gap

Recently in the Korean society and world society, the worsening phenomena of polarization and subjective perception of class have been the subjects of concern as a serious social problem. When the phenomenon of polarization is deepening and the subjective perception of class is negatively formed in the society, discomfort among social classes is fueled and will untimely hinder social integration. Though many studies on polarization have been conducted, they have been limited to illuminating polarization from an objective perspective, considering it as a structurally formed phenomenon in the society. Previous studies have attempted to reveal the main influencing factors of the worsening phenomena of polarization and class. However, studies that examine the relationship between cultural factors and them are relatively difficult to find and discussions on the role of cultural factors have been insufficient. With the recognition of these problems, this study focuses on the issues of the deepening phenomenon of perception of the polarization and the worsening phenomenon of the subjective perception of class against the objective class level in Korean society, and empirically elucidates the effects of the cultural factors as an alternative to mitigating them. This study classifies polarization in social and economic terms, and extends the discussion of previous studies that focused mainly on economic and objective polarization. This study has the distinction in that a comprehensive discussion on the polarization is attempted, and an empirical analysis of the perceptions of society members is conducted.
