혼인 형태와 행복의 관계:
 결혼과 시민결합의 매개효과 비교를 중심으로

청년들이 결혼하지 않는 추세가 지속되고 있다. 이들 세대가 장차 중⋅노년에 접어들면 국가 전반의 행복이 크게 하락할 것이다. 출산이 결혼과 강력하게 결부되어 있는 한국에서는 이로 인한 심각한 저출산 문제도 함께 나타나고 있다. 유럽의 사례를 참고해 비교적 진입장벽이 낮은 시민결합을 도입하여 정핵 수혜의 범위를 넓히는 것이 한 가지 해법이 될 수 있다. 본고는 전통적인 결혼과 대안적 제도인 시민결합이 개인 행복에 미치는 영향을 비교하고 함의를 논한다. 유럽 11개 국가의 EVS 설문 응답자를 결혼, 시민결합, 독신으로 삼분해 매개효과분석을 실시한 결과 시민결합은 결혼과 유사한 행복 상승 효과를 보이는 것으로 드러난다. 시민결합은 파트너 간 유대감 및 안정감을 형성해 행복을 증진한다. 우리 사회는 방법을 가리지 않고 사람들이 삶의 파트너를 찾도록 도와야 한다. 심각한 혼인 지표를 감안하면 정책을 통해 보수적 문화를 극복하는 전향적 조치가 필요하다.

The Relationship Between Marital Status and Happiness: A Comparative Analysis of the Mediating Effects Between Marriage and Civil Partnership

The trend of young adults abstaining from marriage continues unabated in many countries around the world. As this demographic transitions into middle and old age, overall happiness is poised to significantly decline in nations affected by this phenomenon. In South Korea, where childbirth is strongly associated with marriage, this trend only exacerbates the serious issue of low birth rates. Examples from Europe have shown that one potential solution could involve introducing civic partnerships with relatively lower entry barriers to broaden the scope of policy benefits. This paper compares the impacts of traditional marriage and the alternative institution of civic partnerships on individual happiness and discusses the implications of such impacts. To this end, a mediation analysis stratified by marital status (married, civic partnership, single) is conducted using survey responses from 11 European countries, and the findings of this analysis reveal that civic partnerships demonstrate a happiness increase akin to that observed in marriage. Civic partnerships foster a sense of solidarity and stability between partners, thus enhancing happiness. Our society should strive to assist individuals in finding life partners regardless of their preferred institution of partnership. To address the alarming indicators of marriage decline, it is necessary to implement these types of proactive policy measures aimed at overcoming conservative cultural barriers.
